As the spirit spoke, they passed through the wall and stood on a country road. It was now

daytime, and there was snow on the ground.

“I know where we are!” Scrooge shouted, “I was born here and lived here as a boy." He

began to have the memories of his life as a boy, A tear came into his eye.

“If you remember this place.” the spirit said,“you may now lead ( 带领 ) the way.”

“I remember everything about it,” Scrooge said.

The boys came nearer, and as they came, Scrooge knew them and called out their names. He

felt so happy to see them all again.

“We are now at the school," said the spirit. “Only one child is there, left alone there by the

others.

Scrooge knew who the child was, and he began to cry. They walked on and soon came to the

school house. They walked through the house until they came to a room that was empty except for

a small boy sitting at a desk, reading. It was Scrooge when he was young. Scrooge sat down and

cried as he looked at himself as he used to be.

Suddenly, a man wearing strange clothes stood outside the window. He was leading a

horse.“It's Ali Baba !" Scrooge shouted. “It's dear. old, honest Ali Baba ! Yes, yes, I remember. One

Christmas, I was left here all alone, and the other boys had all gone to their homes. He did come.

for the first time just like that.

Scrooge remembered how lonely he had been as a child. “Poor boy!" he said, and tears came

into his eyes. “I wish," he said, “but it's too late now.”

“What do you wish?” asked the spirit.

“There was a boy singing a Christmas carol at my door last night. I should have given him

Everyone is happy on Saturday morning, but Tom isn't. He sits in font of a high fence.“Too

His fiend Ben is walking in the street and he is eating a big red apple. He sees Tom and

says,“Tom, I'm going swimming, but you can't come with me. You're working.”

Tom says,“I like it! I can go swimming every day, but I can't paint a fence every day.”

Ben is surprised and he watches Tom paint slowly and carefully, and he smiles. Tom looks

happy and even sings songs. At this time, Ben wants to paint too. “Listen, Tom, Let me paint a

little," says Ben,“I want to try.”

Tom looks at Ben and says, “I'm really sorry, Ben, but Aunt Polly wants me to do it, You

know I'm very good at painting. My brother Sid wants to do it, but he's not good at painting.”

“Oh, Tom, let me try, please!” says Ben “Here, you can have my apple.

Tom is happy, but he doesn't smile. “OK. Ben, you can paint for a short time."

Then Tom's other friends come by. They watch Tom paint and they all want to try too. They

give Tom a new kite, a cat, an old knife, a key and some other things. Tom's friends paint the big
