Introduction
Welcome to "The ChatGPT HR Advantage: Mastering the AI
Revolution in HR". Your journey through this book will reveal the
extraordinary opportunities awaiting HR professionals ready to
harness the power of AI, particularly the potential of ChatGPT.
The tale begins back in 1987, when I’d saved up to buy my first
computer. My young fingers danced across a ZX Spectrum keyboard
and my imagination lit up at the possibilities of computer
programming. It was an era when Lotus 1-2-3 was the cutting-edge
spreadsheet tool for businesses, offering a taste of what would
eventually explode into today's omnipresence of sophisticated data
tools.
I stepped further into the digital realm at Rhodes University, where
the untapped potential of the internet and the tantalising prospect of
remote work (even though it was becoming possible then, it took a
global pandemic in 2020 to later make this concept a palpable reality)
came into my purview. In 1999, the ringing of my first mobile phone
marked my enlistment into the world of unbroken connectivity.
While working at the International Data Corporation, I leveraged
technology to morph a week-long task into a few short hours by
writing Excel macros, illustrating the power of software to optimise
operations. This experience thrust me into the unfolding narrative of
mobile devices. Here, I encountered the XDA, a forebear of today's
smartphones, and the iPod, a device that would redefine our
interaction with music.
In 2007, I held my first iPhone. The sleek device in my palm hinted at
a paradigm shift in personal technology. A decade later, the world of
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) opened up before me, during a
conversation at a KPMG dinner. This encounter led to co-founding a
company dedicated to transforming the way businesses operate
through process automation.
The year 2022 marked my initiation into the realm of AI writing
assistants. Discovering these potent tools was akin to a close
encounter with a new species of intelligence, the likes of which
humankind had never seen. This was my introduction to ChatGPT, a
form of generative AI that I immediately recognised as a game-
changer, a catalyst on par with the advent of computers, spreadsheets,
the internet, and mobile technology.

Chapter One: A Brief History of
ChatGPT
In this chapter, you will learn:
• The timeline of AI from its inception to the present day,
including the emergence of deep learning and the recent
advancements in AI models like ChatGPT.
• OpenAI's contribution to the field of AI and its development of
ChatGPT, a powerful AI model trained on vast amounts of
internet data.
• The capabilities of ChatGPT, including its extensive knowledge
base and its ability to understand and sustain intelligent
dialogues.
• The practical applications of ChatGPT in the HR function, such
as resume screening, candidate engagement, onboarding,
training and development, and performance management.
• The benefits of using ChatGPT in HR, including improved
efficiency, time savings, and enhanced service to employees,
allowing HR professionals to focus on more strategic activities.
The Timeline of AI to Now
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has fascinated us for centuries, but its
serious pursuit began in the mid-20th century. Our journey begins in
1956 at Dartmouth College, where a meeting of brilliant minds
contemplated the concept of 'intelligent machines.' This marked the
initiation of formal AI research.
The ensuing decades saw novel algorithms and innovative techniques
taking form, driving the boundaries of AI further. The 1980s, however,
proved pivotal with the emergence of 'deep learning,' a technique
crafted by John Hopfield and David Rumelhart. It employed artificial
neural networks to learn from data and became the foundation of
myriad AI applications, ranging from image recognition to speech
recognition.
The rekindled interest in AI in recent years has been driven by models
like OpenAI's ChatGPT, trained on vast datasets. Capable of
generating text, translating languages, and providing informative
responses, it exemplifies the ever-evolving capabilities of AI.
AI, permeating our lives, revolutionises the medical field, drives the
birth of autonomous vehicles, and even composes music. As we stand
on the brink of this AI revolution, it's clear that it's poised to reshape
our future, including business, in ways unimaginable.
OpenAI's Contribution:
Started in 2015, OpenAI had a heavy-hitting line-up within its
founding group including Elon Musk, Sam Altman (former leader of Y
Combinator and Reddit), Ilya Sutskever (prominent figure in the
world of AI and machine learning), and others.
The goal of OpenAI was to "ensure that artificial general intelligence
benefits all of humanity". OpenAI has created many impressive AI
projects such as DALL-E and Whisper. However, in this book, we will
focus on one of their most remarkable achievements, the Generative
Pre-trained Transformer or GPT. GPT is an AI model that OpenAI
started developing in 2016. Over the next five years, OpenAI refined
GPT by training it on a vast amount of internet data.
ChatGPT:
In 2022, OpenAI made a landmark advancement in AI, unveiling
ChatGPT, an intuitive chatbot that fostered a deeper understanding of
natural language processing. This leap forward caught the attention of
tech giant Microsoft, leading to an $11 billion investment, a significant
portion of which boosted ChatGPT's computational prowess to learn
and respond to myriad queries.
ChatGPT was trained on a vast array of internet data, including
billions of sentences from sources as varied as webpages, academic
literature and social media. This enabled it to amass an extensive
databank of human knowledge as found online.
The result is ChatGPT, a sophisticated artificial intelligence. This
powerful tool crafts intricate responses by predicting subsequent
words through statistical analysis, exemplifying AI's potential to
revolutionise business.
ChatGPT boasts two vital components:
Knowledge : A vast repository of data utilised in its training. This
library enables ChatGPT to answer a myriad of user queries.
Understanding : The ability of ChatGPT to emulate understanding.
As illustrated throughout this book, ChatGPT interprets, analyses and
sustains intelligent dialogues.
Utilising these facets, millions globally are harnessing
ChatGPT to:
Engage in organic conversations, akin to human interaction.
Deliver comprehensive answers to intricate questions.
Create a diverse array of textual content, spanning poems,
codes, scripts, musical pieces, emails, and letters.
Effectively translate languages.
OpenAI's release of ChatGPT created a buzz in the tech industry,
leading Google to create its version, called "Bard." However, during a
demonstration of Bard, the model provided an incorrect answer,
causing Google's shares to fall by more than 7%, resulting in a loss of
approximately $100 billion in market value. In contrast, Microsoft's
shares increased, indicating the market recognises the potential value
of this technology.
If ChatGPT can provide direct answers to user queries, it has the
potential to change how we search for information, which is Google's
primary revenue source.
Since writing the first edition of this book, I’ve trained over 1,700
business users on how to effectively and responsibly use ChatGPT in
their businesses. I always make a point of following up to see how
they’re using it and their feedback and findings are included in this
updated edition.
You can reach ChatGPT via your browser by going to this URL:
https://chat.openai.com where you can sign up for a free account
which I’d suggest doing before continuing onto the next chapter.
Once you’ve had a chance to play and experiment with ChatGPT, you
may wish to consider upgrading to ChatGPT Plus. You can see what
the differences are in the appendix at the end of this book.
Why ChatGPT is relevant to HR professionals
ChatGPT can be used by HR professionals to improve a variety of
tasks, including:
Recruitment: ChatGPT can be used to screen resumes,
answer candidate questions, and schedule interviews. This
can free up HR professionals to focus on more strategic
activities.
Onboarding: ChatGPT can be used to provide new hires with
information about the company, its policies, and its benefits.
This can help new hires feel more comfortable and confident
in their new roles.
Training and development: ChatGPT can be used to create
personalised training programs for employees. This can help
employees develop the skills they need to be successful in
their roles.
Performance management: ChatGPT can be used to analyse
feedback from employees and provide them with coaching
and development opportunities. This can help employees
improve their performance and reach their full potential.
Overall, ChatGPT can be a valuable tool for HR professionals. It can
help HR professionals improve efficiency, save time, and provide
better service to employees as well as free up HR professionals to focus
on the more rewarding parts of their roles (for example, not having to
spend as long writing or reviewing policies!).
